The awesome features of Get Medieval

Got questions? Get answers right here. The Get Medieval FAQ should help answer your questions and solve problems you may have.

Q: Help! I have a Matrox video card and Get Medieval either crashes or is really slow! How do I get the game to work?
A: Fear not! David Goldstein (DAG) found this tasty little fix! If you have a Matrox Millennium 2 or a Mystique video card, all you need to do is install the 3.70 version of the Matrox drivers to solve your problem! Click Here to download the new drivers

Q: Get Medieval crashes on my system, what can I do?
A: First, try downloading DirectX 6 from here: Download DirectX 6 Next, try getting the latest video and/or sound drivers from your card maker's web sites. Finally, run the Get Medieval Advanced Options by holding down the SHIFT key as you start the game, and then select, "Disable Direct Video Access" or "Disable All Audio" as necessary.

The Creative Labs AWE64 sound card and some similar cards use hardware for the first 32 MIDI voices, and software for 32 more. If you have such a card, and are experiencing *any* kind of sound problem or crashes (especially if it affects other games as well), go into Control Panel, Multimedia, and select the MIDI tab. If you have "WaveSynth" selected, you have the extra 32 voices turned on, and this can cause tremendous slowdown or crashes on even the most powerful systems. Instead, select "MIDI for Creative Wave Effects Synthesis". If your card is from another manufacturer, you may want to try choosing another MIDI device in the list of devices, or contact their technical support about this issue.

Thanks again to David Goldstein! What a guy! ;)

Q: How can I speed up an Internet game of Get Medieval?
A: To speed up your Internet game, try setting the TIC-DUPE value as low as you can, while still maintaining a normal frame-rate. The higher the TIC-DUPE value, the less responsive your controls will be. TIC-DUPE controls the "frame-rate vs player responsiveness" trade-off. Less player responsiveness means the net packets have more time to travel. The RESEND DELAY is there so the game does not choke your net device. For a modem, it should be around 50. For a LAN, 10-30 should be fine.

If the TIC-DUPE value is set too low for your net connection, your input will be processed faster and your character will be more responsive, but you will end up spending time waiting for the net packets to arrive, so your frame-rate will suffer.

The only thing that will really help is a net connection with lower latency. Also, make sure not to have modem compression turned on, as that will hurt your Internet latency and drag you further down into the Pit of Eternal Slowness!

Q: Where is the manual for the game? I can’t find it!
A: To find the Get Medieval manual, look in your Medieval directory on your hard drive for a file called MEDIEVAL.HLP. Double-click on this file to open the manual!

Q: How can I get the UPLOAD SCORE option to work correctly?
A: You’ll need to make sure three things happen before your scores can be uploaded.
1) Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
2) Make sure you have or are playing the game in HARD mode. Next, you have to play the retail levels (Dragon Quest). Then, you have to have set a user name via the "Player" menu (ie, even if you create a new user via the "Users" menu, you still need to set it to the player-slot you want. If the player name is "Player1", "Player2", etc., your score won't be saved to any user.
3) Check your WININET.DLL file in your Windows/System directory and make sure that it is 372KB, created on or after 5/11/98 to insure that you have the latest file possible.

After all this, you should be able to upload your score to the Get Medieval web site!

Q: What’s that little colored disc under my character for?
A: The colored disk is for Multiplayer gaming. If, for example, four people choose to play as the Archer, it would get confusing trying to keep track of your character among the other characters. Using the disk allows you to spot your character easily in the heat of battle, as each disk is a different color.

Q: How do I get two to four gamepads to work with Get Medieval?
A: In order to use two to four gamepads, like the Sidewinder Gamepads, try this. First, connect the gamepads into each other and make sure that the first gamepad in the chain is plugged firmly into the gameport on your computer (usually the sound card). Next, make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your gamepads. Now, go into the Game Controllers in your CONTROL PANEL. You should now see the Microsoft SideWinder gamepads listed in the Game Controllers box. If you see this, press ok and close the program. If you don’t see the gamepads listed, try adding an additional gamepad to the list.

Once Windows sees the gamepads, start Get Medieval and then go to OPTIONS, PLAYERS. Now, you’ll need to assign the gamepads to any of the four players and you should be able to start your game and play.

Q: What are the Get Medieval "Advanced" options?
A: The "Advanced" options will normally not be needed, but can be useful if you are running into any problems while running Get Medieval on your particular system. By using the advanced options, various features can be enabled and disabled to increase performance if necessary.

Q: How do I access the "Advanced" options?
A: To access the "Advanced" options, simply hold down the SHIFT key when you start the game!

Q: What does "Disable Direct Video Access" in the advanced options menu mean?
A: Disable Direct Video Access will disable ALL access to the video card directly. This is useful if you're computer is crashing in the game at the title screen or when you first start a game. This kind of problem is usually due to a video driver problem. Please keep in mind that the performance of the game will probably degrade slightly if you activate the Disable Direct Video Access box.

Q: What does "Disable All Audio" in the advanced options menu mean?
A: Disable All Audio turns off both the sound effects and the music for the entire game. This is useful if you have less than 16 Megs of memory on your system.

Q: What does "Disable Sound Effects" in the advanced options menu mean?
A: Disable Sound Effects turns off the weapon noises, creature grunts, etc. This is useful if Get Medieval is running really slow or crashing your system.

Q: What does "Disable Music" in the advanced options menu mean?
A: Disable Music turns off the musical tunes for the game. This is useful if the game is running really slow, or if you have low memory (16 megs or less) and are receiving game crashes.

Q: What does "Disable High Quality Sounds" in the advanced options menu mean?
A: Disable High Quality Sounds will deactivate the loading and playing of the super, high quality sounds in the game. Disabling this feature will provide a performance boost for low end systems or low memory systems where the game is “stuttering” or “jerky”.

Q: My joystick doesn't work with Get Medieval, what can I do?
A: First, make sure your joystick is calibrated for use with Windows by running the Windows calibration test found in My Computer/Control Panel. If you have a Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad, download the latest version 3.02 drivers here: Download the Latest Sidewinder Drivers

Q: I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad/Joystick, but the profile I made for it doesn't work! What's happening?
A: The profile is conflicting with the default keyboard controls in the game. Since it's so easy to configure Get Medieval from inside the options menu, we recommend that you do not use a profile for Get Medieval.

Q: Is there a way to disable the character speech in the game?
A: Yes there is. Go to the Main Menu and select Options. Now select Audio and you will be able to turn off the speech.

Q: Can I adjust the music volume independent of the sound volume?
A: Yes! Go to the Main Menu and select Options and then Audio. Now use the sliders to adjust the sound and music volumes independently.

Q: Is there a way to take a screenshot in Get Medieval?
A: You bet! To take a screenshot in Get Medieval, just press the F8 key at any time! Then look in your Get Medieval directory and you will find your bitmap screenshots listed as Gm0001.bmp, Gm0002.bmp, etc.!
